What to me and to you, woman?

Introductory note: As a result of the pandemic, the custom was established in Latin America to send and publish the gospel with a sermon every Sunday so that members and friends who for various reasons cannot attend the Sunday service can receive them. A group of priests take turns sending sermons every week. We share in this issue the first sermon that Rev. Gloria Connell, ordained in 2024, prepared for this purpose. Dear Community,

On other occasions, we have heard in the Gospel, that the mother of Jesus kept everything in her heart, she kept all the experiences of the life of Jesus as a witness.

Today in the Gospel we appreciate the image of the mother of Jesus, who perceives the need of the community that is gathered in celebration, and she shares this need with Him.

Jesus listens to his mother and there is a response; What to me and to you, woman? In this moment, what she kept in her heart before, now becomes the strength from which the first sign of Jesus Christ can be accomplished. This made it possible for the community to celebrate, with the wine that was born from the transformation of the water.

If today our inner mother were to ask us if we see the needs of our brothers and sisters, would we be able to listen to her? In what she asks, advises and encourages us, how can we answer the question: What to me and to you? What is it that flows between me and my brothers and sisters in Christ?

Every Sunday when we gather to celebrate as a community we can keep in mind the question: What to me and to you, Christ? What is it that can flow from us to him? Are we open so that the experiences of Christ can dwell in us and thus be manifested in our daily lives?

Every time we stand before the altar, in community, to celebrate the Communion and receive the wine, now as the blood of Christ, we can once again ask ourselves the question; What to me and to you, O Christ?  And this question could be answered from our souls being witnesses of the experiences of the Christ, just as the mother of Jesus was.

John 2:1-12

And on the third day a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there, 2and also Jesus was invited, and His disciples, to the wedding. And of the wine having been deficient, the mother of Jesus says to Him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus says to her, “What to Me and to you, woman? My hour is not yet come.” His mother says to the servants, “Whatever He may say to you, do it.” Now there were six stone water jars standing there, according to the purification of the Jews, having space for two or three measures. Jesus says to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And He says to them, “Now draw some out and carry it to the master of the feast.” And they carried it. And when the master of the feast had tasted the water having become wine, and did not know from where it is—but the servants having drawn the water knew—the master of the feast calls the bridegroom, and he says to him, “Every man first sets out the good wine, and when they might have drunk freely, the inferior; you have kept the good wine until now.

This was the beginning of the signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and He revealed His glory. And His disciples believed in Him. After this, He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother, and His brothers, and His disciples, and they stayed there not many days.

¿Qué a mí y a ti, mujer?

Nota introductoria: A raíz de la pandemia, se instauró en América Latina la costumbre de enviar y publicar cada domingo el evangelio acompañado de un sermón de manera que miembros y amigos que por diversos motivos no pueden asistir al servicio dominical puedan recibirlos. Un grupo de sacerdotes toman turnos para el envío de sermones cada semana. Compartimos en esta entrega el primer sermón que Gloria Connell, sacerdote ordenada en 2024, preparó con este propósito.

Querida Comunidad,

En otros momentos, hemos escuchado en el evangelio, que la madre de Jesús guardaba todo en su corazón, ella alberga todas las vivencias de la vida de Jesús como una testigo.

Hoy en el evangelio apreciamos la imagen de la madre de Jesús, que percibe la necesidad de la comunidad que está reunida celebrando, y lo comparte con Él.

Jesús escucha a su madre y hay una respuesta; ¿Qué a mí y a ti, mujer? En este momento lo que ella antes guardó en su corazón, ahora es la fuerza para realizar la primera señal de Jesucristo. Así fue posible celebrar en comunidad, con el vino que ha nacido de la transformación del agua.

Si hoy en día nos preguntara nuestra madre interior si vemos las necesidades de nuestros hermanos y hermanas ¿podríamos escucharla? En lo que nos pide, aconseja y alienta, cómo podemos responder la pregunta ¿Qué a mí y a ti?, ¿qué es lo que fluye entre mi yo y mis hermanos en Cristo?

Cada domingo en que nos juntamos a celebrar como comunidad podemos tener presente la pregunta ¿Qué a mí y a ti, Cristo? ¿Qué es lo que puede fluir de nosotros hacia él? ¿Estamos abiertos a que las vivencias del Cristo puedan habitar en nosotros y así puedan manifestarse en nuestro día a día?

Cada vez que nos paramos frente al altar, en comunidad, para celebrar la comunión y recibir el vino, ahora como la sangre de Cristo, podemos hacernos nuevamente la pregunta; ¿Qué a mí y a ti, oh, Cristo?  Y ésta podría ser respondida desde nuestras almas como testigos de las vivencias del Cristo, como lo fue la madre de Jesús.

*Con este pequeño sermón quise experimentar la imagen de lo femenino en nosotros, el alma como la madre que es testigo de nuestro vivir. Dejar resonando preguntas de como la vivenciamos o no la vivenciamos en nosotros.

Juan 2:1-12

Al tercer día se hicieron unas bodas en Caná de Galilea; y estaba allí la madre de Jesús. Y fueron también invitados a las bodas Jesús y sus discípulos. Y faltando el vino, la madre de Jesús le dijo: No tienen vino.Jesús le dijo: ¿Qué a mí y a ti, mujer? Aún no ha venido mi hora. Su madre dijo a los que servían: Haced todo lo que os dijere. Y estaban allí seis tinajas de piedra para agua, conforme al rito de la purificación de los judíos, en cada una de las cuales cabían dos o tres cántaros. Jesús les dijo: Llenad estas tinajas de agua. Y las llenaron hasta arriba. Entonces les dijo: Sacad ahora, y llevadlo al maestresala. Y se lo llevaron. Cuando el maestresala probó el agua hecha vino, sin saber él de dónde era, aunque lo sabían los sirvientes que habían sacado el agua, llamó al esposo, y le dijo: Todo hombre sirve primero el buen vino, y cuando ya han bebido mucho, entonces el inferior; mas tú has reservado el buen vino hasta ahora.
Este principio de señales hizo Jesús en Caná de Galilea, y manifestó su gloria; y sus discípulos creyeron en él. Después de esto descendieron a Capernaum, él, su madre, sus hermanos y sus discípulos; y estuvieron allí no muchos días.
