Windows into the Bible

This week we would like to share with you, beautiful artwork by Jurocê Miranda, a Seminary student from Brazil. These wonderful drawings were made in the context of the “Bible Studies” course at the Seminary. They touch on two important topics that we have been covering this Trimester: the theme of Baptism and the story of Elijah the prophet.

Baptism of Jesus

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him, and behold, a voice from heaven said,"This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:14-17)

Elijah’s Ascension

When Elijah and Elisha had crossed the Jordan, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” And he said, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.” And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. (2 Kings 2:9-12)
